A ZEPHYRUS SAMPLE JOURNEY
THE DESTINATION STORY
Romania, beyond the obvious
Romania is easy to reduce to one story: Dracula, castles and Transylvania.
But that is only the beginning. This journey moves from Bucharest towards the Carpathians, through royal residences, medieval towns, mountain roads and places where history and legend have become almost impossible to separate.
It is a road trip designed around contrast: elegant palaces and fortified towns, forests and modern city life, famous landmarks and unexpected stops that may become some of the strongest memories of the trip.
WHY THIS JOURNEY WORKS
The route matters as much as the sights
Romania is not a destination that works particularly well as a checklist. Its character appears between the major sights: on the road into the mountains, in smaller towns, in forest landscapes and in the change of atmosphere as Bucharest gives way to Transylvania. That is why this route uses more than one base rather than returning to Bucharest every evening.
The Zephyrus route
Recommended pace: 7 days · Add 1 extra day for Sighișoara
DAY 1
From Bucharest into Transylvania
Arrival · Rental car · Salt mine · Brașov
Instead of making Bucharest the first base, begin moving towards Transylvania. Pick up the rental car and use the journey north as part of the experience rather than treating it simply as transportation.
A stop at a salt mine breaks up the drive and introduces one of the more unexpected sides of Romania before continuing towards Brașov. Arrive in Brașov and settle in for the next part of the journey.
WHY WE LIKE THIS DAY
The destination begins immediately
Rather than losing the first day to airport transfers, hotel check-in and waiting for the “real trip” to begin, the road itself becomes part of the itinerary.
WORTH THE DETOUR
The salt mine
It may not be the first image someone associates with Romania, and that is precisely why it works: it breaks the expected sequence of castles and old towns and gives the journey something genuinely different early on.
DAY 2
Brașov & the Transylvanian landscape
Give Brașov time. The temptation is to use it only as a convenient base for Bran, but the town deserves to be experienced in its own right. Explore the historic centre at an unhurried pace and leave some unscheduled time simply to walk.

THE STORY BEHIND THE DESTINATION
Transylvania is not a theme park
Its identity comes from centuries of overlapping cultures, fortified settlements, trade routes, mountain geography and local traditions. The legends are part of the experience. They should not replace the place itself.
ZEPHYRUS NOTE
Don’t build the whole trip around Dracula
Bran may be the name everyone recognises, but Romania becomes far more interesting when the castle is treated as one chapter of Transylvania rather than the entire story. The strongest itinerary combines the legend with royal Romania, medieval towns, mountain landscapes and everyday places along the route.
DAY 3
Bran: legend vs reality
Bran Castle – exterior, landscape context
Today is the day for the famous castle. Visit Bran – but go knowing what you are actually looking at.
The Dracula association is part literature, part tourism and part modern mythology. That does not make the experience less interesting. Quite the opposite: separating the story people arrive expecting from the history of the place itself makes the visit far more memorable.
Continue exploring the surrounding area rather than immediately returning after the castle.
ZEPHYRUS NOTE
Enjoy the myth. Just know that it is a myth.
There is nothing wrong with enjoying the Dracula connection. Travel becomes more interesting when we know where the story ends and the history begins.
DAY 4
Royal Romania
Sinaia · Peleș Castle · Cantacuzino Castle
Peleș Castle – architecture + Carpathian setting
This is the day that completely changes the visual language of the trip. After medieval Transylvania and Bran, move towards Sinaia and the world of royal Romania.
Peleș gives the journey another historical layer, while Cantacuzino offers a very different atmosphere and setting. Do not rush the route simply to collect both castles. The landscape surrounding them is part of the day.
DON’T JUST SEE IT – NOTICE THIS
Romania’s castles do not all tell the same story
Bran belongs largely to the international mythology of Transylvania. Peleș tells a story of monarchy, ambition and a Romania looking towards modern Europe. Seeing both is more interesting than choosing one simply because it is more famous.
DAY 5
The road less rushed
Optional extension: Sighișoara
Sighișoara – colourful medieval street / Clock Tower
This is where the original journey benefits most from an extra day. Sighișoara should not be squeezed into an already full driving day simply because it looks close enough on a map.
Add the day and let it become part of the journey. A medieval town needs time to be walked, not simply photographed.
ZEPHYRUS PACE RULE
If a place needs rushing to fit, it does not fit.
A good itinerary is not the one that contains the most pins. It is the one that gives the right places enough time to matter.
DAY 6
Back towards Bucharest – with a change of rhythm
Move south towards the Bucharest area and change pace completely. Instead of returning directly to a central city hotel, use a quieter base such as the Edenland area.
After several days of driving and sightseeing, this gives the itinerary something many travel plans forget to include: a change of rhythm.
ZEPHYRUS NOTE
A good itinerary does not need to be full every hour.
One of the easiest mistakes in travel planning is assuming that unused time is wasted time. It isn’t. Changing pace is part of good route design – especially on a road trip.
DAY 7
Bucharest & Therme
Use the final full day for Bucharest and a completely different experience at Therme. After castles, forests, mountain towns and road travel, finishing with the capital and time to relax gives the journey a satisfying contrast.
This is not simply “something to do before flying home.” It is the closing chapter of the route.
BEFORE YOU DRIVE
Practical route notes
A ZEPHYRUS PRACTICAL NOTE
Distance on a map is not the same as travel time
Romania is a road-trip destination where distance on a map does not always tell you how long the journey will feel. Allow more time than you think you need between stops. Road conditions and traffic can make drives slower or more tiring than expected, particularly once the itinerary moves away from major routes.
Parking matters
Paid parking is common, including in places where visitors may expect easier street parking. When choosing accommodation – particularly in Brașov and Bucharest – check the parking arrangements before booking.
Whenever possible, choose accommodation with confirmed parking rather than planning to solve it after arrival.
What we would personalise in a full itinerary
— Accommodation by neighbourhood and parking needs
— Daily driving times and realistic stop windows
— Restaurant and food suggestions
— Bookable experiences and ticket timing
— Family-specific pacing and alternatives
— Rainy-day options and route swaps
— Exact reservations, transport and practical notes
