A ZEPHYRUS SAMPLE JOURNEY

Fourteen days from the city to the Mediterranean
Follow the changing landscapes of France through selected châteaux, vineyard roads, Provençal towns and a Riviera finale. Consecutive nights in each base give the journey time to settle, while the longer transfers receive days of their own.
This 14-day sample includes arrival and departure. Fly into Paris and out of Nice where suitable flights allow; collect the car only when the countryside journey begins.
THE DESTINATION STORY
Let the landscape change the journey
France does not keep the same character from Paris to the Mediterranean. The Loire chapter follows rivers, gardens and estates. Burgundy brings historic towns and vineyard landscapes. In Provence, stone villages share the route with Avignon and Roman Arles. Nice finishes the journey with a city that has its own life beside the sea.
The pleasure lies in those changes, and in the time between the headline places. A village lunch, a short road through the vines or an evening in the same square can become as memorable as an entrance ticket.
WHY THIS JOURNEY WORKS
Five bases reduce the daily cycle of packing and checking in. Paris stays car-free, the longest drives are kept clear of major visits, and Nice has a full day without driving. Village loops sit between city days so Provence offers more than a succession of viewpoints.
The base plan
Paris 2 nights · Loire Valley 2 nights · Burgundy 2 nights · Avignon or a suitable Provence base 4 nights · Nice 3 nights
ZEPHYRUS NOTE
The route is already a substantial journey
Protect time within these regions before adding another one. The 14-day sequence runs towards the south-east; an extension needs extra nights and a revised route rather than an extra stop hidden inside a transfer.
What makes the road part of the experience
Use faster roads when they protect rest and arrival time. Choose a smaller road when there is time to enjoy it. A scenic detour becomes worthwhile when you can stop, walk and have lunch, rather than watch the landscape pass through the windscreen.

The order of the Provence day trips follows market days, weather and reservations. Exact drive times are checked from the chosen hotels, with parking, stops and arrival arrangements included.
DAYS 1 AND 2
Paris as a gentle beginning
Day 1 Arrival and one neighbourhood
Transfer to your hotel and let the arrival time set the day. Choose a short Seine walk or one nearby neighbourhood, then have dinner close to your base. Keep a delayed flight or a slow check-in from turning into a missed museum reservation.
Day 2 One selective city day
Choose one major experience: a museum, Île de la Cité or an area that particularly interests you. Give it the morning, take time for lunch, and continue through one neighbourhood in the afternoon. Keep the evening for a final Paris dinner before collecting the car the next day.
ZEPHYRUS NOTE
Paris introduces this journey
A longer stay in Paris offers a fuller city experience. Here, two nights establish the beginning of the road trip. Choose the Paris experience that matters most and leave energy for the regions ahead.

DAYS 3 AND 4
The Loire Valley through contrasting estates
Day 3 Collect the car and reach the Loire
Choose a practical rental collection point with a straightforward departure route from Paris. Allow time for paperwork, luggage and becoming familiar with the car. Drive to your Loire base around Tours or Amboise, pause for lunch and visit one château or garden only if arrival time allows.
Day 4 Two châteaux with different personalities
Select two estates that work together geographically and offer a clear contrast. Chenonceau brings the château and gardens into a river setting; Chambord offers a different sense of architectural scale. These are possible choices, with the final pairing adapted to your base, interests and visit times. Keep lunch between them and avoid a third entrance.
THE STORY BEHIND THE PLACE
The gardens belong to the visit
Interiors, formal gardens and the surrounding landscape tell different parts of an estate’s story. Give the outdoor spaces time rather than treating them as the path from the car park to the main building.

DAY 5
From the Loire Valley to Burgundy
Loire base · Lunch en route · Beaune or Dijon · Two-night stay
This is a longer transfer day. Leave after breakfast, choose a sensible lunch stop and let the road occupy the middle of the day. Avoid an ambitious château visit before departure or a fixed afternoon reservation at the other end.
Settle into Beaune or Dijon, according to the accommodation and Burgundy route you have chosen. A short walk and a local dinner are enough for the first evening. Beaune gives the following vineyard day a compact historic starting point; Dijon may suit travellers who want a larger city base.
ZEPHYRUS ROUTE RULE
Arrival includes more than reaching the map pin
Allow for fuel or charging, tolls, breaks and the final approach to the hotel. Parking and carrying luggage can take time in a historic centre. Confirm where to stop before following navigation straight towards the hotel entrance.
Keep the transfer honest
A faster road may be the right choice today. Scenic driving is reserved for the chapter where you have time to stop. If a detour matters to you, remove something else from the day and recalculate arrival.
A quieter evening is part of the design
Walk a few streets, notice the change from the Loire and enjoy a meal without rushing towards another attraction. Staying a second night lets tomorrow begin with the region rather than another suitcase.
DAY 6
Burgundy beyond the tasting room
Beaune · Historic centre · Local food · A short vineyard loop
Begin in Beaune and its historic centre. If the Hospices de Beaune are a priority, make that the main interior visit and check current admission arrangements. Take time for lunch before moving into the countryside.
Choose a manageable loop through vineyard villages near your base. A route towards Pommard and Meursault is one possible direction from Beaune; the exact stops follow your interests, season and available time. Arrange one food or vineyard experience if wanted, with transport planned so the driver can remain free of alcohol.
THE STORY BEHIND THE DESTINATION
Wine is also a landscape
Vineyards sit beside villages, roads and historic buildings. You can enjoy the region through walking, food and the pattern of the countryside without arranging a tasting at every stop.
ZEPHYRUS NOTE
Keep the loop short enough to leave the car
Two worthwhile stops and time on foot usually give this chapter more character than a long list of cellar doors. Return to the same base for dinner.

DAYS 7 AND 8
Arriving in Provence and staying in Avignon
Day 7 Burgundy to Avignon
Drive south with a proper lunch break and realistic arrival buffer. The landscape shift is part of the day. On arrival, check in and take a first walk within or near Avignon’s walls; leave village excursions for the following days.
Day 8 Avignon and the Rhône
Give the Palais des Papes the morning at your booked time, then spend the afternoon in the historic centre and around the Rhône. Choose one further cultural stop if it interests you, or keep the day for streets, cafés and time by the river.
THE STORY BEHIND THE PLACE
Provence has an urban history too
The palace places Avignon’s papal past at the centre of this chapter. Its scale changes the journey after Burgundy’s vineyards and before the smaller villages of the Luberon.
Make the base work for the whole stay
Choose accommodation with practical parking and access to the roads used for the Luberon and Arles day trips. A central stay may make the evenings pleasant, while an outer location can simplify driving. Check the actual walk and parking arrangements rather than relying on a description of “central”.
ZEPHYRUS NOTE
Four nights give Provence a stable rhythm
Stay in Avignon or one suitable Provence base for this chapter. A full city day, a village loop and an Arles day trip can then have different moods without requiring three hotel changes.
Adjust the palace visit to the travellers
The Palais des Papes route includes many stairs and steps. Check the current access information before booking when mobility is a consideration, and build an appropriate alternative if needed.
DAY 9
The Luberon through villages and smaller roads
Gordes · Roussillon or another chosen village · Optional third stop
Reach the first village early and park in a designated area before continuing on foot. Gordes and Roussillon offer a possible pairing: the hilltop stone village and the colours associated with the ochre landscape. Choose the exact route around market days, weather and your Provence base.
Pause for lunch at the second stop. Add a third village only when the first two have left enough time to enjoy it. An optional trail or longer walk replaces a further village rather than being added to an already full loop. Return to your base for the evening.
DON’T JUST SEE IT NOTICE THIS
The landscape changes the colour of the day
Look at the buildings, hillsides and materials as you move between villages. The Luberon’s character becomes clearer when you spend time in the streets and surrounding landscape, beyond the familiar panoramic view.
ZEPHYRUS PACE RULE
Leave room for the road
Check access for any outdoor trail on the day. Heat, weather and seasonal restrictions may change the plan. A shaded lunch and a shorter walk can be the best version of the day.

DAY 10
Arles adds another layer to Provence
Roman heritage · Historic streets · Market or lunch · One cultural choice
Explore Arles with one main historical visit, such as the Roman amphitheatre, and a walk through the centre. Check the available monument ticket options before choosing how many interiors to enter. The city deserves time between them.
If the day matches a market, make it part of the morning rather than assuming it will be open whenever you arrive. Otherwise, choose lunch in the centre and keep the afternoon for an art or history visit, a walk or an early return to your Provence base.
THE STORY BEHIND THE PLACE
The city changes the Provençal chapter
Roman monuments and Arles’s artistic associations offer another way to understand the region. This day gives the journey depth between village landscapes and the Mediterranean finale.
Choose the afternoon rather than filling it
An archaeological museum may suit someone who wants the morning’s history to continue. An art-focused stop may appeal more to another traveller. Check current exhibitions, opening days and the time needed to move between sites before committing.
ZEPHYRUS NOTE
One historic city is enough today
Do not automatically add a Camargue circuit or another town after Arles. If either matters more to your group, redesign the day around it. Keep a final relaxed Provence evening before moving east.
Season decides the detail
Summer heat, festival crowds and shorter off-season opening hours can all change the pace. Use earlier hours for exposed walks and leave an indoor or shorter alternative available.
DAYS 11 AND 12
Nice is a destination in its own right
Day 11 Provence to the Riviera
Drive towards Nice, pause for lunch and settle into the final base. Keep the afternoon for the Promenade des Anglais and a first walk in Old Nice, depending on arrival time. Leave Monaco, Cannes and other coastal towns for a separate decision.
Day 12 A day without driving
Start in Old Nice and visit Cours Saleya according to the market on that day. Monday brings antiques in place of the flower market. Continue towards the sea and choose a viewpoint, museum or neighbourhood walk according to interest and energy. Allow a slower afternoon and a final seafront walk.
ZEPHYRUS NOTE
Let the car stop being the centre of the trip
Consider returning it on arrival in Nice if the coastal excursion and airport transfer work by public transport or a booked transfer. Compare the full rental terms and luggage arrangements before deciding.

DAYS 13 AND 14
One coastal route and an unhurried ending
Day 13 Choose one direction
Choose an eastern route towards Èze, Menton or Monaco, or a western route towards Antibes. Give the day one main destination and add one nearby second stop only if the journey remains comfortable. Avoid trying to collect the whole Riviera in one day.
Decide transport for the specific place you want to visit. A railway station with a familiar town name does not always place you in the hilltop village or at the attraction. Check the onward connection, return service and walking route before relying on it.
ZEPHYRUS ROUTE RULE
The excursion should suit the ending
Menton may appeal for streets and a coastal lunch; Antibes for its old town and waterfront; Èze for a hilltop visit. Choose for the experience, the weather and your travellers’ mobility, then leave the final evening in Nice open.
Day 14 Departure from Nice
Check out and allow time for the airport transfer, terminal and any remaining car return. If the car is still with you, include the rental return location, fuel or charging requirement, inspection and onward walk or shuttle. A morning flight may leave no sightseeing time.
ZEPHYRUS NOTE
Finish the route where it finishes
Paris in and Nice out keeps the journey linear when flights and budget allow. A return flight from Paris changes the final days substantially and needs a revised route, rather than an extra drive added at the end.
BEFORE YOU GO
Road trip planning that makes the days work
Flights and rental first
Confirm arrival and departure airports, collection and return branches, opening hours, one-way charges and the full rental conditions. Choose a car that suits the luggage and passengers. Collect it after the Paris stay, not on arrival.
Plan from the hotels
Calculate each drive from the actual accommodation and allow for breaks, tolls, parking and access to historic centres. Check current local access rules and any vehicle requirements with the rental company and official local guidance for the dates.
Keep the longer drives clear
The Loire to Burgundy and Burgundy to Avignon chapters need realistic road time. Fixed visits at the destination can remove the buffer needed for delays. A short arrival walk remains flexible.
Match visits to the season
Reserve important château or palace visits through official channels. Check market days, museum closures, festival dates and current outdoor access. Gardens, vineyards and village walks offer different experiences through the year; do not assume lavender will be flowering during your visit.
Choose parking as carefully as the room
Verify whether parking is on site, reserved or in a public garage, and how luggage reaches the accommodation. In Nice, compare keeping the car with returning it early and using suitable transport for the last days.

THE ZEPHYRUS DIFFERENCE
This Sample Journey brings together the route, pace and regional stories that make a France road trip rewarding. The days offer structure while leaving room for a lunch, a street or a landscape that deserves more time.
A personalised Zephyrus itinerary adapts the journey to your dates, budget, travellers and confidence with driving. You may prefer gardens to palace interiors, gastronomy to tastings, more time in Provence or a quieter Riviera finale. Those choices shape the route before the bookings are made.
