Prague
From first-hand experience
Zephyrus creator Theodora has personally travelled through Prague, bringing together first-hand experience and careful research — the practical details, pace and small choices that can make a journey feel effortless. This sample guide is only the starting point: your own itinerary can be shaped much further around your dates, interests, budget and travel style.

A ZEPHYRUS SAMPLE JOURNEY
A compact city break built around layers, viewpoints and the pleasure of walking a city that reveals itself slowly.
THE DESTINATION STORY
Prague is not one beautiful old town.
Prague is often sold as a collection of photogenic landmarks: a bridge, a clock, a castle and a skyline of spires. The city becomes much more interesting when those places are treated as connected chapters rather than separate stops.
This journey follows Prague across the Vltava and through its historic layers – from the Old Town and the Jewish Quarter to Malá Strana and the Castle district – while leaving enough unscheduled time for courtyards, cafés, tram rides and streets that were never meant to be “attractions”.
WHY THIS JOURNEY WORKS
Cross the city instead of collecting it
The route is intentionally compact. Prague rewards repeat crossings: seeing Charles Bridge early, returning after dark, approaching the Castle from above, and coming back down through Malá Strana creates a stronger sense of place than trying to “finish” every landmark once.
RECOMMENDED PACE
4 full days • 5 days if you want a slower café-and-neighbourhood rhythm
THE ZEPHYRUS ROUTE
Four days, one connected city
| Day | Area |
|---|---|
| 1 | Old Town |
| 2 | Jewish Prague |
| 3 | Castle + Malá Strana |
| 4 | Beyond the postcard |
The route is designed to be mostly walkable, with trams used strategically rather than as a substitute for experiencing the city on foot.
ZEPHYRUS NOTE
See Charles Bridge twice
Go once early, when the bridge still feels like a piece of the city rather than a crowd corridor. Then return after dark or at blue hour. The second visit changes the experience because the bridge stops being a sight to “do” and becomes the connection between two different sides of Prague.
PACE RULE
Do not overbook the centre
Prague’s historic core is compact. A day that looks “light” on paper can feel full once you include walking, interiors, viewpoints and spontaneous stops. Leave space between timed entries.
DAY 1
Old Town: learn the city before chasing the views
Begin in Staré Město, but resist the urge to move immediately from headline landmark to headline landmark. Use the first morning to understand the street pattern around Old Town Square, the Astronomical Clock and the lanes that lead away from the busiest routes.
Continue towards the river later in the day. The first crossing of Charles Bridge should feel like a transition, not simply a photo stop. End on the Malá Strana side or return to the Old Town for dinner depending on your energy.
DON’T JUST SEE IT
Look above eye level
Prague is a city of façades, rooflines, towers and details. Much of the visual character is missed when the day is spent looking only at maps, shopfronts and queues.
DAY 2
Jewish Prague: history that needs time
Give the Jewish Quarter its own half-day rather than treating it as a quick detour between Old Town landmarks. Josefov carries a history that cannot be reduced to a single synagogue or cemetery photograph.
Build this part of the day around the Jewish Museum sites that matter most to you, then allow time afterwards to walk back into the surrounding city. The contrast between the preserved historic sites and modern central Prague is part of the experience.
THE STORY BEHIND THE PLACE
A neighbourhood shaped by survival and transformation
Jewish life in Prague stretches across centuries, through periods of restriction, cultural flourishing, persecution and near-destruction. The surviving sites are powerful precisely because they are not isolated monuments: they form part of a much longer urban story.
ZEPHYRUS NOTE
Do not rush this day
This is not the day to stack five unrelated attractions around the Jewish Quarter. Leave emotional and practical breathing room, especially if visiting several memorial or museum spaces.
DAY 3
Castle above, Malá Strana below
Approach Prague Castle from above rather than climbing directly from the river. Tram 22 is the easiest classic approach, and the official Castle guidance also recommends arriving near the complex and walking down afterwards through the Lesser Town. This lets gravity work with the itinerary instead of against it.
Explore the Castle complex and St. Vitus Cathedral, then descend gradually through Hradčany and Malá Strana. The point of the day is not only the Castle itself; it is the shift from monumental Prague to smaller streets, gardens, courtyards and river views.
PRACTICAL NOTE
Check the Castle before you go
Prague Castle operating hours change by season and parts of the complex can close for state or operational reasons. Check the official Castle site shortly before the visit and avoid building a rigid day around one interior.
WORTH THE DETOUR
Walk down, don’t just ride back
The descent from the Castle into Malá Strana gives context to the city’s geography. It is one of those moments where route design adds more than another ticketed attraction.
DAY 4
Beyond the postcard
Use the final full day for the Prague that sits just outside the compulsory list. Choose according to mood rather than trying to include everything: Letná for viewpoints and open space, Vinohrady for neighbourhood rhythm, Vyšehrad for history and a different perspective on the river, or Holešovice for a more contemporary side of the city.
This is also the right day for a longer café stop, a market, a design shop or simply returning to the part of the city you liked most. A strong city break should end with recognition rather than another sprint through unfamiliar streets.
ZEPHYRUS CHOICE
Pick one neighbourhood, not four
The final day works because it creates contrast with the historic centre. Choose one area and spend enough time there to feel the change in pace.
NIGHT NOTE
Prague after dark is part of the itinerary
Return to a favourite viewpoint or cross the river again after dinner. The city’s lighting and quieter late-evening streets create a different experience from the daytime crowds.
PRACTICAL PRAGUE
Small decisions that make the city easier
TRANSPORT
Walk first, tram second
Central Prague is highly walkable. Use trams strategically for climbs, longer neighbourhood jumps or the Castle approach. A route that mixes walking and public transport usually feels easier than repeatedly returning to the metro.
TIMING
Early mornings matter
The most famous central spaces change dramatically before the main visitor flow arrives. Use one early start for Charles Bridge or Old Town, then allow the rest of the trip to run at a normal pace.
ACCOMMODATION
Choose location by rhythm, not only by distance
Staying directly on Old Town Square is not automatically better. A quieter edge of the centre, Malá Strana, Vinohrady or another well-connected area can produce a better overall stay, depending on whether you value nightlife, quiet mornings or easy tram access.
TICKETS
Book only what truly needs a slot
Do not turn Prague into a chain of reservations. Pre-book high-priority timed experiences when necessary, but leave flexibility for weather, queues and the simple fact that the city is enjoyable between attractions.
